Description

Inter Aide is an association specializing in the implementation of concrete development aid programs, carried out with particularly deprived families living in rural areas.

In 2025, Inter Aide managed 51 programs across seven countries (Ethiopia, Guinea, Haiti, Malawi, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone). Inter Aide has been working in Malawi with particularly deprived rural communities since 1992. The association is present in 10 of the country’s 28 districts, in the Central and Southern regions.

Since 2016, Inter Aide has been supporting families in central and southern Malawi in producing wood energy by planting hedgerow trees on family farms. From mid-2025, these actions on degraded areas through agroforestry will take on a more comprehensive dimension of landscape restoration and preservation of natural forests as part of the “Eco-wood” project (reconciling ecosystem preservation and wood autonomy).

This project, which will be implemented in Malawi and Madagascar from 2025 to 2029, will contribute to the protection of biodiversity while meeting the energy and economic needs of rural populations, promoting the planting of native tree species, and involving communities in forest management. To achieve this, the project is structured around three axes:

  1. Meeting the wood needs of families through agroforestry or forestry production, with productive species adapted to their village territories, supplemented by the regeneration and planting of native species.
  2. Mobilize all local stakeholders to co-construct and implement appropriate methods for sustainable and integrated management of agricultural and forest landscapes.
  3. Define the conditions for reproducing and scaling up solutions and capitalize on cross-disciplinary lessons as part of an ongoing process of reflection, cross-evaluation, and practical exchanges between local and academic stakeholders.

The implementation of these complementary dynamics will be supported and nourished by ongoing studies aimed at characterizing the ecological state of the environments, better understanding the evolution of landscapes and the relationships of populations with these spaces, and measuring the effects generated by the action.

The mission:

You will be based in the capital, Lilongwe, near one of the project’s intervention areas. You will have extensive travel within the districts of Lilongwe and Phalombe (located respectively 1 hour and 6 hours by road from Lilongwe), and also to meet other project stakeholders and partners (Government, NGOs, international and bilateral cooperation agencies, universities, etc.).

You will have the following responsibilities:

  • Define and implement an action plan to initiate and ensure the institutional anchoring of the project and collaboration with the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change as well as the Agricultural Advisory and Soil Conservation Departments of the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Support the Inter Aide Sector Manager based in Malawi in the technical supervision of the teams responsible for implementing the project, in order to ensure the strategic and methodological coherence of the various actions on the Eco-bois project within the different intervention zones, including the monitoring and evaluation system.
  • Support the Sector Manager in coordinating technical collaboration with the local partner WeForest, including planning and monitoring meetings, monitoring the collection of monitoring and evaluation indicators and the preparation of half-yearly and annual reports, technical and strategic exchanges on the activities implemented within the framework of the partnership.
  • Provide supervision of international and local interns on the Eco-bois project and actively participate in the co-supervision with our local partner WeForest of Master’s theses from MUST University of Malawi.
  • Develop and monitor local micro-partnerships with NGOs and private entrepreneurs aimed at integrating synergies with improved stove sales channels.
  • Clarify the legal framework and propose marketing strategies for timber products derived from the sustainable pruning of individual agroforestry plantations. Depending on opportunities, develop and monitor a pilot test phase in the Lilongwe area.
  • Support the Sector Manager in the review and harmonization of technical documents used by the teams for the production of summary documents and capitalization of technical/institutional lessons and experiences acquired during the implementation of the project.
  • Present the project and its achievements punctually to the main stakeholders likely to be able to participate in the conditions for the sustainability of the project (national coordination committees for forest landscape restoration, districts, etc.). Identify areas of synergies with potential new partners and ensure their follow-up.
  • With the support of the project teams, coordinate the production and updating of project cartographic presentations and the monitoring of reference plots using aerial photography by drones.
