What is the structure of FAO?

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has eight departments, which are:

  1. Agriculture and Consumer Protection: This department works to support sustainable agricultural development and food security worldwide. Its focus areas include plant production and protection, animal production and health, agribusiness, food safety and quality, and nutrition.
  2. Climate, Biodiversity, Land and Water Department: This department is responsible for promoting sustainable management and use of natural resources, with a focus on climate change, biodiversity conservation, land management, and water resource management.
  3. Corporate Services, Human Resources and Finance: This department provides administrative and support services to FAO, including financial management, human resources, and procurement.
  4. Economic and Social Development: This department works to promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in rural areas. Its focus areas include rural poverty reduction, social protection, gender equality, and sustainable livelihoods.
  5. Fisheries and Aquaculture: This department works to ensure the sustainable management and utilization of fisheries and aquaculture resources, with a focus on food security, livelihoods, and biodiversity conservation.
  6. Forestry: This department works to promote sustainable forest management and the conservation of forests and trees outside forests, with a focus on reducing deforestation, promoting reforestation and afforestation, and enhancing the contribution of forests to sustainable development.
  7. Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development: This department works to foster partnerships with other organizations, institutions, and stakeholders, and to advocate for policies and practices that promote sustainable agriculture and food security. It also provides capacity development services to member countries and partners.
  8. Programme Support and Technical Cooperation: This department provides technical assistance and support to FAO’s decentralized offices and field projects, with a focus on enhancing the quality and effectiveness of FAO’s programs and activities. It also provides technical cooperation services to member countries in support of their efforts to achieve food security and sustainable agriculture.
