ALIMA PRESENTATION
THE ALIMA SPIRIT: ALIMA’s purpose is to save lives and care for the most vulnerable populations, without any discrimination based on identity, religion, or politics, through actions based on proximity, innovation, and the alliance of organizations and individuals. We act with humanity, impartiality, and respect for universal medical ethics. To access patients, we are committed to operating in a neutral and independent manner.
THE VALUES and PRINCIPLES of our action, included in our CHARTER:
- The patient first
- Revolutionizing humanitarian medicine
- Responsibility and freedom
- Improve the quality of our actions
- Trust
- L’intelligence collective
- Environmental responsibility
ALIMA promotes and defends the principles of fundamental human rights. ALIMA has a zero-tolerance approach to those guilty of acts of gender-based and sexual violence, as well as to inaction in the face of alleged or actual violence. Protecting the people benefiting from and impacted by our work is our top priority in everything we do. Everyone working with ALIMA commits to:
- Respect the charter, the code of conduct, institutional policies including the policy of protection against abuse of power and sexist and sexual violence, the policy of prevention of corruption and fraud;
- Report any violation of policies, documents, framework and procedures to a superior or a referent.
CARE – INNOVATE – TOGETHER: Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated more than 13 million patients in 15 countries, and currently operates in 12 African countries and Haiti. In 2022, we developed 62 humanitarian medical response projects to meet the needs of populations affected by conflict, epidemics, and extreme poverty. All of these projects support national health authorities through nearly 511 health facilities. We work in partnership, particularly with local NGOs, whenever possible to ensure that our patients benefit from expertise, whether in their own country or elsewhere in the world. In addition, to improve the humanitarian response, we conduct operational and clinical research projects, particularly to combat malnutrition and viral hemorrhagic fevers.
OUR PROJECT THEMES: Malnutrition, Sexual and reproductive health including gender-based violence, Primary and secondary health, Pediatrics, Malaria, Epidemics (Hemorrhagic fevers, meningitis, Cholera, Measles, Dengue, COVID-19).
THE ALIMA TEAM: More than 2,000 people currently work for ALIMA. The field teams, closest to patients, receive support from the coordination teams, generally based in the capitals of the countries of intervention. These receive support from the four desk teams and the emergency and openings department team based at the operational headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. The Paris and New York teams actively work on fundraising as well as representing ALIMA. The rest of the ALIMA Galaxy includes individuals and partner teams who work on behalf of other organizations such as the medical NGOs BEFEN, ALERTE Santé, SOS Médecins / KEOOGO, AMCP, the research organizations PACCI, INSERM, the Universities of Bordeaux and Copenhagen, the NGO Solidarités International, and many others.
OUR COUNTRIES OF OPERATION: Mali, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Guinea, Sudan, Mauritania, Ethiopia, Haiti.
ALIMA IN CHAD:
Chad is experiencing a severe food and nutrition crisis, exacerbated by significant population influxes and its vulnerability to natural disasters and epidemics. ALIMA began its activities in Chad in 2012 in partnership with the Chadian medical NGO Alerte Santé.
In 2012, the project implemented in the Ngouri health district, in the Lac health province, was implemented with the support of ECHO, OFDA, UNICEF, and WFP. The project focused on improving the quality of care, a major challenge in Chad given the difficulty in mobilizing qualified medical skills. Since 2021, Alerte Santé & ALIMA has been conducting the OptiMA study project in the Ngouri, Dibinitchi, and Isserom health districts with financial support from Givewell, as well as the CRESH resilient hospital project with support from several foundations.
Since April 2013, ALIMA & Alerte Santé have also been supporting SAM treatment in N’Djamena. Before the implementation of this ALIMA & AS project, only the Notre Dame des Apôtres dispensary in the South District offered free malnutrition treatment in the capital. After two years of operations, the project has demonstrated the scale of the malnutrition problem in urban areas (in N’Djamena, where the SAM rate reaches 2.8%).
Since 2021, an OptiMA study project has been underway within the UNT of HATC in N’Djamena.
ALIMA has also been running a community project in the 9th arrondissement of N’Djamena since 2022 in partnership with the French Development Agency for the treatment and prevention of malnutrition.
In the Lake Chad Basin, the humanitarian situation has deteriorated following the upsurge in attacks by the GANEs and the effects of climate change.
Since 2019, ALIMA/AS has been providing free, high-quality medical and nutritional care to children under 5, as well as free preventive and curative health care to displaced populations and those living in the Liwa Disaster Relief Program affected by the Lac crisis. ALIMA/AS’s approach makes it possible to provide medical and nutritional care in areas far from health centers, thereby providing access to health care for displaced populations.
In response to the Sudanese crisis and the influx of Sudanese refugees into Chad, ALIMA began operating in 2023 to conduct health and nutrition activities for refugees and host communities in the east of the country. ALIMA is currently operating in the Sila province, supporting the medical care of patients in refugee sites as well as in a health center.
Thanks to its extensive coverage and the recognized quality of its intervention, ALIMA has established itself as a major healthcare player in Chad.
Between January and September 2024, ALIMA treated more than 35,000 cases of acute malnutrition in children under 6 years old, representing nearly 9% of the country’s total treatment.
Over the same period, 140,669 outpatient consultations, 1,146 hospitalizations and 13,000 home care treatments were carried out by our teams across all our areas of operation.
